| 24 Dec 2012Year end statement December has been a very busy month for me. Early in december I enjoyed a special lecture and demonstration at the MFA Textile and costume society meeting. The guest speaker was a professor from MIT who specializes in textile research. She also enjoys researching the history and collecting of early american caskets. This casket is not for funerals;This is the name for a special box that was typically made by school age girls(13 years old) for keeping their treasures. The girls often sewed elaborate decorative cloth covers and often had hidden compartments. Research has shown that the box often began as a kit that was purchased from a company specializing in this craft for girls. This lecture gave me lots of interesting fabric history.I was surprised that they used the same glue ingredients that were used in the making of obi at about the same time(about 1703) |

| In mid-december I had the pleasure of hosting a dinner party for friends,some
old and some new. It is always fun to learn more of their life experiences,and learn how it can continue to shape the lives of others. This group included artists,teachers, business executives,lawyers and doctors(One is a Nobel prize winner!) As the Christmas season approached,I enjoyed receiving greeting cards from many friends from around the world and around the corner. I was especially honored that some very special greeting cards were from the MFA Director,The Textile department curator,and my long-time curator and friend from Australia. My involvement in the MFA-Boston is the most important part of my Boston life. I continue to learn so many new things,and meet new friends there,and most important appreciate that they are taking good care of my Quilts for the pleasure and education of future generations. I am also proud to say that I have made another donation this year of a collection of my family historical materials and some pieces from my antique collection to the MFA. As the year draws to a close,there have been many sad events as well,including the tunnel collapse in Japan and the senseless killing of so many children ad teachers at the Sandy hook school in Newtown Connecticut. This was a big shock,but it also led me to thinking about this year and my life,and how lucky I am. I continued to make good progress with my new work,meetings with new artists,etc. I have also reflected on the accomplishments that I have acheived in my life,and I am proud to make my quilts, and especially to have some in the MFA-Boston permanent collection. I am grateful and satisfied for all that I have learned from so many in Boston,of course I want to continue to learn more,and most important continue to make my works preserved for future generations in 2013. As I look ahead to the near future,I am finishing the preparations for my featured Exhibition at the Tokyo International Great Quilt festival from January 24 - 30, 2013. I will be presenting a Gallery talk twice a day during the exhibition. The night time temperatures are usual below zero centigrade. We have had some small snowfall,but it is all gone right now,with more expected in the next few days. I am enjoying many kinds of chowder,warm fresh bread,and cooking other winter foods:) |
